Dachshund puppies, often called “sausage dogs,” are small, playful, and full of personality. Taking good care of them from an early age helps them grow healthy and happy. Here are some essential tips for raising your Dachshund puppy.
1. Provide a Safe and Comfortable Home
Create a warm and safe space for your puppy. Dachshunds love to burrow, so a cozy bed with soft blankets will make them feel secure. Keep harmful objects and small items out of reach — they’re naturally curious!
2. Feed a Balanced Diet
Choose high-quality puppy food designed for small breeds. Feed your Dachshund 3–4 small meals a day until they are around six months old, then reduce to two meals daily. Avoid giving them human food, especially chocolate, onions, and fatty foods.
3. Regular Exercise
Although Dachshunds have short legs, they are energetic! Daily short walks and playtime are important, but avoid jumping from high places — it can hurt their long backs.
4. Training and Socialization
Start basic training early. Use positive reinforcement — praise and treats work best. Expose your puppy to different people, pets, and sounds to help them become confident adults.
5. Grooming and Hygiene
Depending on the coat type (smooth, long, or wire-haired), brush your Dachshund regularly to prevent tangles and shedding. Bathe them only when needed and keep their ears clean and dry to avoid infections.
6. Veterinary Care
Schedule regular vet checkups and vaccinations. Discuss parasite prevention (fleas, ticks, and worms) with your vet. Spaying or neutering is also recommended unless you plan to breed responsibly.
